First Strike is the first downloadable content pack for Call of Duty Black Ops. It features 5 new maps: Stadium, Kowloon, Berlin Wall, Discovery and a brand new zombie map named 'Ascension'.

BERLIN WALL

Berlin Wall seems to be based during the assault that eventually brought it down. The map is of a medium size and is most definitely, on a ground level, a CQC (close quarter combat) kind of map, however if you can get into the windows of the upper floors of the buildings there are many vantage points for sniping and long range combat. The area is covered in snow with tight ally ways and derelict houses.

In the middle of the map is a 'Red Zone' where if the clearly marked boundaries are crossed automated minigun nests fire upon the player resulting in death. There are a few walkways between this red zone that are also clearly marked out on the ground that allows the players to cross to other parts of the map safely, it is an enjoyable and unpredictable map that with its many corners and turns could mean death at any conceivable moment.

DISCOVERY

Discovery is another snow map based in a desolate German outpost. Stretching through the middle of the map is a deep chasm in which falling down it will result in instant death so peering over the edge to get a closer view isn't advised. stretching across the chasm is a metal bridge which is the main pathway to reach the other side and where a lot of the fighting takes place.

Around each side of the map there are alternative pathways to the other side, making it possible to flank and get behind the enemy adding cunning and tactics into the mix. There is also a smaller snow bridge that stretches just under the main metal one, due to the fact it is made of snow and ice it can be blown up with explosive weaponry and equipment condemning anyone who is unlucky enough to be on it at the time to an early grave. The map itself is of a medium size and is very open, favouring assault rifles and sniper rifles. There are many prime sniping spots around the map, that are perfect for picking off the enemy from a long range, one of these been a large bridge that runs along the side of the map and stretches from one side to the other.

This map will definitely be favoured by those who like to keep a little distance between themselves and their enemies and it's a really fun map to play, It's also interesting to see what weapons people choose to use on it, as picking the right weapon is crucial to surviving.

KOWLOON

Kowloon is based in a shanty village and is the map in which the 'Escaping Kowloon' campaign mission take place.

Kowloon itself is very much different from the rest of the maps in the download pack and even the default maps, but is fun none the less. It is the smallest of the new maps but, differing floor levels and ramps with varying gradients makes it appear much bigger than it actually is. There are several buildings that offer vantage points to see major parts of the map, however the centre building towers over them all. The centre building is accessible from all sides and the player has to fight their way up the altering gradients of the map to reach it. Once in, there are two zip lines that lead from the centre to the edges of the map, allowing for a quick escape or for cunning flanking tactics.

The map is made up of sharp corners and turns and so it favours CQC weaponry, however there are a few windows and other areas where long range weaponry could be used. It's a fun little map that engorges in fierce fast paced battle, or slow cautious battle depending on the game mode.

STADIUM

Stadium is possibly the most 'out of place' map to be included in the map pack in that it bears no relation to the games campaign mode or even to the kind of places that are explored within it.

It takes place in and around a stadium and so, there are open courtyards as well as buildings with ledges and windows. The map is always very explosive no matter what the game mode, as the architecture and layout of the map makes it seem very confined and closed in. There are no spots in which you are truly safe as there are either multiple entrances and exits to a single building or severely over exposed ledges and windows. This is definitely not a map for those who like to sit and wait for their enemies to come by, because chances are you going to get shot in the back. The map isn't particularly fun to play due to the fact that tactics don't play as much of a part in the game as desired, trying to flank the enemy will more than likely result in them appearing in a door way behind you. This is a map that any weapon can be used as long as you get into the right position, however the main weapon of choice seems to be SMG's and assault rifles.

ASCENSION

Ascension Is a huge rocket launch facility that has been over run with a horde of zombies and its your job to annihilate as many of them as possible. This map brings a few new features to the table in terms of game play while keeping all the original ones in place, such as the pack 'a' punch and the perk vendors.

I'm sure everyone is familiar with the teleportation platform in Kino De Toten, well in Ascension they have done away with the teleportation system and replaced it with a self guided rocket platform. You simply stand on the platform, activate it and up you go. Unfortunately while on the platform you are unable to move and so shooting zombies from above isn't really an option, you can however rain down the grenades, though it's effectiveness depends on the position you are in.

The second feature included is the chance to get a 'death machine' as a random drop when killing zombies, in the same way you get 'max ammo' or 'fire sale', and in the same tradition as 'fire sale' the amount of time you have it for is limited. However this can be EXTREMELY useful when you get onto the later levels.

The third feature that was altered in the game play is there are no longer 'dog' levels, however these have been replaced with small evil chimp monkey creatures. The main objective of this level is to kill the evil little nasties before they can attack the perk vendors. If they do reach a particular perk vendor and attack it and if you currently have that perk, you will loose it, so be warned. However after defeating all of them you are awarded with max ammo and each person receives a random perk which could include one of the two new perks: Stamina-up (increased running time) and PhD Flopper (a large bomb blast is given off when you fall killing all zombies in its wake, and also no falling damage is given to the player). There are a few new tools at your disposal to help kill the zombies including a black hole device that literally sucks the zombies into an abyss never to be seen again.

All in all the new map is definitely for the hard core zombie players as its tight hallways and stair cases, several large open areas, and hundreds of zombie spawn points make this one of the hardest zombie maps to date, and its awesome!

Bottom Line: The map pack all in all is fantastic and is great fun, and is possibly the best DLC that has ever been released for a Call of Duty game.

silver DewSky's take:

The First Strike Map Pack may be 1200 Points like with the MW2 dlc, but I felt I got a better deal this time around. All of the new multiplayer maps have a distinct look and feel to them, and each still to be pretty flexible no matter what type of game mode you play them on. So far my favorite would probably be Berlin Wall since it offers up some frenetic action while stile being pretty open for different types of players to have fun with.

As for Ascension, the great new zombie map, it feels very familiar in that you can develop a nice pattern to get to higher waves, while offering up new weapons and gadgets to control. Nova 6 Zombies are gone, as well as bloodhounds who have been replaced with small and agile Space Monkeys. They may be a bit easier to take out, but you better guard any perk machines you may be using as they can be destroyed by the little guys.

Definite buy if you're still engaged in Black Ops Multiplayer.

You gotta see this:

Awesome, huh? This is Dead Island, an upcoming zombie game where you are a vacationer that finds yourself surrounded by the Undead. Just that teaser alone has got me excited for this game.

IGN has more details on the game, and so far it seems the developers are looking to stand out by really limiting the way we can fight the zombies. Most of the combat will come in the form of Melee attacks to block of the horde.

Originally announced in 2007, it looks like this game of survival on an small Island will be looking to scare us later this year.

2011 is shaping up to shower us with great games and plenty that will scare the crap out of us all well!

Coming Sometime in March is the second piece of DLC for Halo: Reach. Dubbed the Defiant Map Pack, this DLC feature two new multiplayers maps alongside one new firefight map. Check details on each new map below alongside the trailer for the content:

Condemned:

Condemned takes place aboard Orbital Station Gamma, a massive space station high in orbit above the planet Reach. Prior to the Covenant’s overwhelming invasion, Orbital Station Gamma provided long range communications for UNSC fleets and a vital lifeline between Reach and Earth. During the Battle of Reach, the station suffered terrible punishment at the hands of the Covenant but a few fortified sections remain intact, fully pressurized, and ready for combat. Condemned supports 6 – 12 players in a variety of action-packed game types, including Team Slayer, Team Objective and Free for All.

Highlands:

Highlands takes place on the top-secret Military Wilderness Training Preserve on Reach. The Preserve is a large, wooded area where Spartan super-soldiers trained long before the war with the Covenant began. During the Battle of Reach, the Preserve was the site of key battles between the alien invaders and a group of Spartans who used their familiarity with these UNSC training grounds to significant tactical advantage…but not everyone who enters these woods makes it out alive. Highlands expands the fight with massive-scale engagements for 8 – 16 players in Big Team Battle, Team Slayer and Team Objective.

Unearthed:

Unearthed takes the battle for Reach to a large Titanium mine and refinery located in the Viery civilian sector of the planet. This particular mine was built to take advantage of the exposed titanium inside a massive meteor crater. The titanium produced here is used in much of the UNSC hardware, from the chassis of the Warthog to the meters-thick armor plating of capital ships like the UNSC Pillar of Autumn. While this facility was quickly abandoned when the Covenant arrived on Reach, it still has significant tactical (and economic) value and it won’t be long before both humans and Covenant return to battle for control. Unearthed allows up to 4 players to launch a counterassault against the Covenant in Firefight and Firefight modes such as Generator Defense.

A sequel to the 2007 hit and one of my favorite 360 games, The Darkness, has just been announced for 360, PS3, and PC and will arrive sometime in the fall.

Details on the game are a bit slim at the moment, but I hope it retains all the great aspects from the original since that formula worked out great for the Darkness. Can't Wait!

Press Release:

2K Games Calls for Return of Chaos and Destruction with The Darkness™ II

Quad-Wielding combat, ruthless story and hand-painted graphic noir art style breathe new life into first-person shooter genre this fall

New York, NY – February 8, 2011 – 2K Games announced today that The Darkness™ II, the sequel to the million unit-selling 2007 title, The Darkness™, will be coming to the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Windows PC in fall 2011. Developed by Digital Extremes and based on the supernatural horror comic book series created by Top Cow Productions, Inc., The Darkness II takes players down a brutal and personal path as Jackie Estacado, wielder of The Darkness – an ancient and ruthless force of chaos and destruction.

The Darkness II breaks out of the sea of conventional first-person shooters with its fervid Quad-Wielding gameplay, which will allow players to slash, grab, and throw objects and enemies with their Demon Arms while simultaneously firing two weapons. The game is layered with the use of dark versus light, steeped in deep and twisted storytelling, and engulfed in stylistic violence that is visualized through a hand-painted graphic noir technique that stays true to its comic book origins.

"The Darkness II is a well of dark and imaginative violence, and it's a stylized and beautiful nightmare," said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. "The Darkness II continues the 2K Games tradition of delivering quality, innovative games that are filled to the brim with atmosphere and deep storytelling. The game takes a unique stance on fighting in the dark versus light. Combined with the arsenal of weapons at Jackie's disposal and the gruesome attacks of the supernatural Demon Arms and Darkness powers, we're proud to announce another title that delivers on our core values of creating games for gamers."

The Darkness II will feature award-winning comic book writer, Paul Jenkins, who will provide a tightly integrated narrative that weaves dark humor with hardcore tenderness.

Take a step back from the familiar and comfortable, and prepare to embrace The Darkness.

It's been two years since Jackie Estacado, now the Don of the Franchetti crime family, used The Darkness to kill the men responsible for his girlfriend's murder. He's been unable to shake the memory of Jenny's death since bottling up his supernatural power, and now The Darkness wants out. A sudden, unprovoked attack on Jackie's life heralds the start of a full-scale mob war, which has clearly been orchestrated by some outside force. The botched attempt opens the door for The Darkness to reemerge, and sets Jackie on a journey to hell and worse, as he unravels the mystery behind the attack and the motivations of The Darkness itself.

"Sometimes that whooshing sound you hear is that of comic fans holding their collective breath," said Marc Silvestri, founder and CEO of Top Cow Productions and co-creator of The Darkness comics. "So often disappointed when a favorite character gives birth to a lame movie or video game, us fans have come to expect the worst. And sometimes we get it. But not with The Darkness II. Yeah, call me biased, but this second installment of Jackie Estacado's epic saga is – in my humble opinion – one of the most brutally cool games I've ever played. 2K Games hammered this one out of the park."

The Darkness II is not yet rated by the ESRB. For more information on The Darkness II, please visit www.embracethedarkness.com.

Your mom hates it. You'll love it.

It’s hard to believe the original Dead Space came out in 2008. It feels like yesterday that we were introduced to Isaac Clarke and his mission to board the Ishiamura and find out what was going on there alongside a crew of others. Besides helping on the ship, Issac wanted to go for personal reasons since his love Nicole was on board before all hell broke loose. In his quest to find her, Issac discovered the Marker, a relic containing mysterious attributed and something draws the Necromorphs. Aboard we faced many dangerous creatures in the Necromorphs, an entity that changed humans into hideous and hostile enemies.

Now with Dead Space 2, Isaac Clarke knows how to take them down, but visions from the marker, his past with Nicole, and a three year coma leaves Isaac with a ton of questions that must be answered.

Can you hear me now?

With Isaac Clarke and his problems getting more complex, a voice to go with this great character is pretty necessary. You’ll interact with just a few characters this time, but the dialogue is great and Gunner Wright, Isaac’s voice actor, does a great job of portraying a confused and upset Clarke through out the game.

I’ve had plenty of pratice

The necromorphs can still be taken down by removing their limbs, but the way that you can has changed a bit. All of the original weapons are back in Dead Space 2, and are accompanied by some clever new ones. The plasma cutter was still my go-to weapon, but I had fun experimenting with the new ones as well like the Seeker Rifle, a powerful long-ranged Sniper Rifle that could dispatch foes from a safe distance.

What’s even cooler now is that you can use Kinesis to pick up limbs from dead Necromorphs and use them to impale the creatures. It’s a great to kill them beside helping you conserve some precious ammo.

One Small Step

Zero gravity areas and vacuum environments are back and are even better since now you can control Isaac directly in these sequences rather than jumping from place to place. With boosters on his suit, You can also speed through the sections a bit faster and there are moments in the game are truly epic thanks to this addition.

OMG! The Baby is on Me!

Taking cues from Left 4 Dead, Dead Space 2 features Humans vs. Necromorphs multiplayer that is pretty fun and a nice addition to the game. As the Humans, you and three others are given objectives on the five default maps to accomplish, while the infinitely respawning Necromorphs are there to stop you at all costs.

Most of Isaac’s aresnal can be unlocked for multiplayer overtime as you rank up and earn new abilities, and playing as Necromorphs can grant you stronger attacks as well.

It’s a nice addition, and hopefully dlc will be made since the five maps might get old pretty quick.

*This is a little side-note, but I would like some kind of Horde mode for this game. I think that would be sweet!

Overall, after you play a bit of campaign, you may be surprised that the multplayer is just as fun, so check it out!

Conclusion

This is pretty much the perfect sequel; It retains all the elements that made the original great, while fixing the small problems that Dead Space had and comes packed with some replayablilty and now you can start over from any difficulty and keep your stuff from the previous play.

Dead Space 2 has already been announced to have DLC coming down the line, but if it didn’t It still has hours of great content available. With tighter controls, a bigger enviroment to explore, and a story that spans across other games in the Dead Space universe, Dead Space 2 is the start of the great games coming out way in 2011.
